Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship – Programme Overview

At Kerry Mechanical Engineering, we are committed to developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

Our apprenticeship programmes provide hands-on training in a real engineering environment, supported by experienced fabricators, welders, machinists and project leads. Apprentices gain practical skills, exposure to advanced machinery and a strong understanding of how modern engineering projects are delivered from concept to completion.

The Metal Fabricator apprenticeship at Kerry Mechanical Engineering is a four-year, SOLAS-approved programme that leads to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft in Metal Fabrication. As an apprentice with KME, you will work alongside our fabrication and welding teams on live engineering projects ranging from industrial structures to precision-built assemblies.

Metal fabricators at KME work with structural steel, sheet metal, box section and specialised components for sectors such as construction, energy, water infrastructure and agri-engineering. Apprentices learn how to interpret drawings, mark out and cut materials, carry out MIG and TIG welding, assemble fabricated structures and prepare work for blasting, painting and installation.

Training also includes safe workshop practices, quality standards and an understanding of how fabrication integrates with machining, laser cutting and on-site project delivery.

This apprenticeship gives you the foundation to progress in many directions. Fully qualified fabricators from KME have opportunities to move into site installation, coded welding, production supervision, technical roles, management and further study in engineering.

It is a strong starting point for a long-term career in the engineering and manufacturing sectors.
